Semester GPA Calculator
Quickly calculate your GPA for a single term — perfect for previewing this semester\u2019s grade or checking dean\u2019s list eligibility.
Calculations follow the standard US 4.0 scale. Weighted boosts use the most common +0.5 (Honors) and +1.0 (AP/IB/College) convention. Everything runs locally in your browser.
Semester GPA vs. cumulative GPA
Your semester GPA reflects only the courses in one term. Your cumulative GPA averages every term you have taken. Selective scholarships and graduate programs almost always look at cumulative; honors lists and academic standing reviews use semester. Both numbers matter — and our cumulative GPA calculator combines them automatically.
What a strong semester actually does to your cumulative
If you have 60 credits already at a 3.0 cumulative GPA, a 4.0 semester (15 credits) lifts your cumulative to 3.20 — a 0.20 jump. The same 4.0 semester at 30 credits already in the books would lift the cumulative to 3.33. The earlier in your academic career you have a strong term, the more it moves your cumulative. Plan a recovery semester
- Check the W deadline. Withdrawing strategically from one class can save your GPA more than struggling for a C in it.
- Identify high-credit lifts. An A in a 4-credit course adds 16 quality points; an A in a 1-credit course adds 4. Spend study time accordingly.
- Use pass/fail when allowed. Some schools let you take one elective per term as P/NP — a great safety net for an unfamiliar subject.
- Re-take with replacement. If your school offers grade replacement, prioritize re-taking the lowest-credit, lowest-grade course first.
Frequently asked questions
What is a semester GPA?
Your semester GPA is the credit-weighted average of every course you took in a single term. It tells you how that term went — useful for tracking improvement, qualifying for the dean’s list, or staying off academic probation.
What is a passing semester GPA?
Most US universities require a 2.0 semester and cumulative GPA to remain in good academic standing. Falling below 2.0 typically triggers academic warning, then probation, then dismissal if not corrected.
What is dean’s list GPA?
Dean’s list cutoffs vary by school — typically 3.5 or 3.7 semester GPA on a full course load (usually 12+ credits). Some schools require a perfect 4.0 for "President’s List" recognition.
How do I improve my semester GPA?
Drop the lowest-credit class with a low grade if your school’s W deadline is open, attend office hours for your hardest course, and front-load study time on the highest-credit classes — they have the most leverage on your GPA.
